— “My dearest Georges…” — a note from Jacky
— The beginning

It all begins in a living room.

It all begins in a living room, in the Netherlands. A private concert, French chanson a few metres from the audience. That night, Hervé sings Amsterdam.

In the house, a wall is covered entirely with old postcards. And Hervé still has in mind an interview with France Brel, seen a few days earlier — in it, she says of her father:

“My father didn't write songs — he wrote postcards to people.”

— France Brel

A wall of cards, a sentence heard a few days earlier — the same evening. It wasn't a sign: it was self-evident. The show was born in that room, and carries its name.

— Prologue —

The stories behind the songs we all know. We hum them, we admire them, sometimes from afar. Barbara, Brel, Aznavour — their voices are part of our inner landscape.

Then one day, you discover the story behind the song. Who it was addressed to. Under what circumstances it was written. And everything changes. The song we all know suddenly becomes closer, more fragile, more human.

This experience transformed me as a performer. Not by understanding these songs intellectually, but by feeling them differently — by discovering the man or woman behind the artist.

What I want to share with you is not a history lesson. It's that emotion: the moment when a great song stops being a monument and becomes a confidence.

At the microphone — Verhalenhuis, Haarlem

“The moment when a great song stops being a monument and becomes a confidence.”

Act I

Keeping the songs alive

My conviction is not simply to be nostalgic. My intention is to keep these songs alive. Because the emotions they contain — wild love, grief, anger, hope — are timeless. They are as true today as in 1960. Only the words, the music, have changed.

Act II

An alchemy, not a role

My path as an artist is not to fill a role. It's an alchemy. It's not just about understanding their story, but filtering it through my own experience, mixing in my own emotions.

It's only by connecting their truth to mine that the song ceases to be a monument from the past and becomes a living feeling, here and now.

My first postcard

De celles

Behind the reassuring varnish of appearances, selfishness takes the stage. A caustic work on the words we keep silent, but think under our breath.
